Matlock / Sculpture
Opening days
My work has been evolving over many years and has culminated in creating free standing sculpture in stone and steel.
Some of the smaller pieces are intended to be enjoyed in the home and the larger sculptures may be admired as statement pieces in the garden.
My passion is mainly stone, followed closely by steel, especially stainless steel.
Over the years I have mainly drawn my inspiration from buildings and industrial structures which is mostly due to having worked in the building industry for most of my life.
I like to keep close to home and in doing so enjoy working with local Derbyshire stone and stainless steel from neighbouring Sheffield. For myself, the contrast between the two is near perfection.
I feel both materials that I use represent strength and power, permanent in stature but forever changing when viewed from different perspectives.
I find that light elevates the sculptures to a different level, especially while casting shadows onto the surrounding space within which they stand, encouraging them to grow or shrink in height, width and breadth, allowing illusions to play with the mind.
When viewing my work, it is frequently said that there is a strong similarity with Barbara Hepworth's work in that my sculptures often offer a view through and beyond the piece itself or reflect and distort images, inviting the viewer to experiment with different aspects of the pieces themselves.
