High Peak / Printmaking and mixed media
Opening days
Joanna Allen
Originally from Whaley Bridge I now live in New Mills with my husband and teenage son.
I graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a BA (hons) in Textile Design. I have since worked in many different areas of art and design, including furnishing fabric and greeting cards design, and tapestry kit designs for Primavera, Homes and Gardens, The National Trust, Liberty and Royal Collection. I have exhibited my paintings and prints in galleries both in the UK and abroad.
With a background in textile design it is not surprising that I am constantly drawn to pattern, texture and colour! All sorts of wonderful things can inspire me...
My artwork reflects an attempt to recreate a personal inventory of treasures, possessions and memories, sometimes evoking a hidden secret world of secretive birds, magical characters and strange gardens.
I have an experimental approach to creating images, often using drawing, paint, pastels and collage; this layering of different media and techniques epitomizes how I think and work. I often incorporate elements from my cherished collection of antique china and vintage textiles. I like to break rules: prints are frequently drawn into or re-coloured.
My aim is to create a unique and beautiful surface, experiment with mood and colour, and produce variations on a theme. It’s all a bit of an adventure really.
