Holymoorside, Chesterfield / Ceramics
Opening days
This year has been dedicated to the sea, with its moods and colours and to the interaction or influence it has on human beings: I made many fish related forms and used these forms to indicate our possibility to escape, to be free, to flow and move and to rise above turbulence. There are waves, boats and sunken treasure boxes, caskets, tubes and pods, as well as swimmers and words in seaweed.
As ever, there are references to the Portuguese traditions, their voyages in the East, their love of the sea and of open skies. The popular culture mixes with intricate Chinese embelishments to create an evocative romanticism that exists more in the mind than in the reality of simple life: something that never ceases to intrigue and inspire me.
I continue to experiment with techniques and tend to offer pieces that are unrepeated and intended to question function though wanting to conform. Basically, I am interested in the fluidity of life, always tending to stability but never quite managing it.
